This year will be a special workshop since it will be the inauguration of the new studio I have been working on for the past four years. The studio is in a spectacular location overlooking the Appenine mountains to the east, the Alpi Apuani mountains to the south (where Michaelangelo got his marble from), and the Magra Valley to the west. I hope you will be able to join me for this special event!

For a summary of my teaching materials and structured approach to learning, see my Virtual Art Academy website. For my background and philosophy of painting, see my personal website.

The painting workshop will be held in the Lunigiana region of Tuscany (the northern part of Tuscany near the Appenine mountains). This is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of Tuscany since it includes mountain as well as pastoral scenery and is also near one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the whole of Italy, known as the Cinque Terre region. I have spent the past few years rebuilding an old farmhouse and barn with spectacular views over the Alpi Apuani and the Magra River Valley, and this workshop will be the inauguration of the new studio!

We will work outdoors or plein air, and focus on finding out where you need the most help to move your painting forward. The workshop is tailored to your individual needs and the class size is kept small so we can do this.

The workshop includes tuition and lodging near my studio. Students are expected to fly to Pisa airport (or Genoa or Parma), and rent a car. It is an easy 90 minute drive to the workshop location from any of these airports, mostly on a highway (motorway). In the evening, students typically prepare food together and eat as a group.

More information

For more information click one of the links to the right.

About Lunigiana

Lunigiana is an area in the north of Tuscany, and my studio is located in a position with a spectacular backdrop of the Appenine mountains to the east the Alpi Apuani to the south and a sweeping view of the Magra valley with the Ligurian hills behind it to the west. I chose this part of Tuscany because of the variety of scenery, from mountains, to olive groves and vineyards, river scenes, small hilltop villages. The land is scattered with small medieval villages and many castles, mostly belonging to the Malaspina family. As an added bonus, the Gulf of Poets and Cinque Terre coastline is only 45 - 60 minutes drive away.

For more on the Lunigiana are of Tuscany see: Lunigiana overview

Where And When Do We Meet The First Day?

We will meet at 8:30 for breakfast on the first day of the workshop in one of the houses in the village. If you are asked about the colors, always refer to them as oil colors (do not refer to them as paint). Then you will have no problem. There is a form in Process Unit 6-1 - (Oils/Acrylics) Plein Air Painting Equipment: CHECKLIST: PACKING LIST - SUPERLIGHT TRAVEL that you can print out and put with your oil colors in your checked baggage just to be extra cautious. It will explain to the airport staff that the oil colors are perfectly safe to take on the plane.

Colors to bring
You only need one small tube of each color, but two big tubes of white.

Cadmium lemon or cadmium yellow light

Cadmium red light

Alizarin crimson

Ultramarine blue

Platinum Violet

Cerulean blue or Phthalo Blue

Viridian green

Black

Burnt Umber

Titanium white (oil, acrylic, or alkyd).

For oil painters use alkyd white instead of titanium white to make painting dry quicker if you don't have a drying box. You can also use water-based oil paints (from Winsor & Newton), which are easier to clean up, but still take the same amount of time to dry. Don't worry about that though, because the idea is to learn, not to create a finished painting so it doesn't matter if you scrape the painting off afterwards. Acrylics are more difficult to use than oils outdoors because they dry so quickly, but they are okay if you are used to them. You can also use watercolors.

Brushes to bring

Natural bristle (hogs hair for oils or acrylics). Use filbert or flats (not brights). Filberts and flats have long bristles. Brights on the other had have short bristles. Bring brushes in the following sizes (the sizes refer to the width of the bristles):

one brush 0.7 cm wide

two brushes 1.0 cm wide

two brushes 1.5 cm wide

two brushes 2-2.5 cm wide

For watercolors bring a large brush, middle size and a small brush.

Panels to bring

Loose pieces of linen or canvas is the most portable and lightweight. Bring a board and some masking tape so you can tape the canvas to the board. You can pre-cut some of the canvas to the following sizes:

morning painting sessions: three small painting surfaces for each morning of the workshop 6"x8 (15X20cm), 8X10" (20X25cm) , or 9x12" (23X30cm) (see the course unit on Getting Organized Outdoors for details of how to make lightweight painting surfaces)

(afternoon painting sessions) you may stick with one or two of the same sized panels as the morning sessions, or use one or two additional medium sized panels in the afternoon: either 11x14" (28X36cm), or 12x16" (30X40cm)

To learn how to use and prepare your panels I've put a booklet together in the Process Unit 6-2 Painting Supports - Lightweight

Easel and Palette

easel or tripod and pochade. Avoid the tripod easels that force you to hold your palette in your hand. These are no good!

palette (the larger the palette the better)

drying box

Everything you need to know about traveling lightweight is written up in Process Unit 6-1 Plein Air Equipment. Read the sections on

EASEL SYSTEMS: SUPERLIGHT

DECISION: WHICH OUTDOOR EASEL TO USE FOR SUPERLIGHT TRAVEL

TECHNIQUE: CARRYING LOOSE CANVAS

TECHNIQUE: DRYING PAINTINGS QUICKLY

DECISION: WHICH MOUNTING BOARD AND DRYING BOX TO USE

STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO MAKE A PALETTE CARRIER Note: make it smaller just to carry your palette - you don't need to carry a stretched canvas. Disassemble it to pack it in a suitcase, and bring some duct tape to put it back to together again when you arrive.

STEP-BY-STEP: HOW TO DEAL WITH WET PAINT

Turpentine
You cannot bring turpentine or mineral spirits of course on the plane, but you do not need it. I use olive oil (or any vegetable oil) to clean my brushes when travelling and it works quite well. You can bring a small plastic bottle with some oil in it, or buy some when you get here.

If you paints are stiff, bring a small bottle of linseed oil, or any oil painting medium to thin them.

Other things to bring

brush cleaner (if you can find it, bring Brush Flush since it is safe to bring on the plane.

paper towels

a viewfinder (a piece of card with a 2” by 1.5” rectangular hole cut in it)

notebook & pen or pencil for making notes

notan set. For specific information on what to bring for doing your Notan sketches see Notan supplies

Print out Process: Oils/Acrylic Unit One Alla Prima Painting Approach, and/or Process: Watercolors - Unit One Watercolor Step-by-Step because you will need to refer to this during the painting demonstration.

What Do I Need to Prepare Beforehand?

If you are painting in oils or acrylics, please download and read this pdf booklet for the basic equipment you need for the workshop. If you are painting in watercolors, you can bring what you normally use.
Note: The most important thing for advanced students is to make sure you have a large palette, a palette as large as 18in x 24in, 45cm x 60cm is best. The most common problems that beginners have with their equipment when painting outdoors is a poor arrangement for fixing the palette to the easel. Make sure you solve this problem before you come to the workshop. It is best if you do not bring a system that requires you to hold the palette in your hand with one hand, and a brush in the other. It will be difficult to paint freely in this way.

Bring a photograph (paper form) of two to six of your paintings to share on the first day. For each painting, bring both a color photograph and a black and white photograph. (If you have not painted much before, you do not need to bring any photos).

I suggest you also bring a print out of Process Unit 1 - Plein Air Painting in Oils & Acrylics or Process Unit 1 - Watercolor Step-by-Step in your Virtual Art Academy Process Building Block. This will be a useful checklist for later on in the week.

Note: If you want to learn all the options on how to travel and paint read the process units (6-1, and 6-2) in your Virtual Art Academy Process Building Block.

What are the Accommodations Like?

Accommodation
Rooms will be each have a private bathroom and a double bed and be within 3 km of my studio.

How Do I Get to The Workshop?

Driving there from the airport

From Pisa airport follow the little green signs to the Autostrade A12, and head toward Genova.

After 67km (about 35 minutes), take the A15 towards Parma.

After 9km (about 10 minutes) take the Aulla exit.

From Aulla follow the signs to Licciana Nardi

Do you want to share the driving with someone else?
If you would like to share the driving/travel costs with another student place a request for a travel companion on these two places:

Barry's facebook page First click the event, then type something in under 'Post'

The Virtual Art Academy Online Campus

Nearest airports
We recommend you fly to Pisa, Florence, Genoa, or Parma. Pisa is probably the best since it has many international connections. From the airport you can then hire a car to get you to your accomodations in Licciana Nardi.

Pisa airport is about one and a half hours way

Florence airport is only two hours drive away from the workshop location.

Parma is about one hour away

Genoa is about one and a half to two hours away

If you can only get to Rome or Milan. Milan is the closest. It is about 3 and a half hours drive away.

Airlines
British Airways, Air France, and United (Lufthansa), fly to both Pisa and Florence.

Car rental/hire
AutoEurope and Europcar, and several other major car rental companies such as Hertz and Avis also have offices at these airports. You can compare rental prices here.

Note: Travel in Italy is very simple and the rental companies all speak English.Car hire is much the same as in the US or in England.

Getting there by train and taxi
If you do not want to drive, you can either arrange to travel with someone else (post your request on our online campus for a travel companion), or you can get to the workshop location by taxi and train. Trains go all the way to Aulla in Lunigiana.

Here is a brief guide to train travel in Italy -

Types of Trains in Italy
Eurostar (ES or Treni Eurostar Italia
Italy’s top class of train is called Eurostar (not the same as the one that travels under the English channel). Seat reservations on Eurostar Italia are mandatory. Eurostar is a fast method of transport between major Italian cities.

Intercity and the newer Intercity Plus trains
Intercity and Intercity Plus are also both fast trains that run the length of Italy, stopping at the large cities. First and second class carriages are available. First class coaches offer slightly better seats and have generally less people in them. Seat reservations are compulsory on the Intercity Plus trains, and the fee is included in the ticket price. Seat reservations can be made for some Intercity trains, too.

Regionale (Regional Trains)
The Regionale are the local trains, that often run around work and school schedules. They are cheap and usually reliable, however seats can be difficult to find on the main routes. Many regional trains have only second class seats, but if available, consider first class, asking for Prima Classe, per favore, there is more likely to be space in first class, especially during commute times.

How to find your destination on the train schedules
In every train station there are both white and yellow/orange train schedules displayed. For departing trains, check the yellow/orange colored poster. It will tell you the route, the major intermediate stops, the the times the trains run. Make sure you check the notes column; expect schedule changes for weekends and holidays (there are generally fewer trains that run on weekends).

How to buy an Italian train ticket
There are several different ways to buy a train ticket in Italy.

Go to a ticket window at the station equipped with the time and destination of the train you want to take, the number of tickets you need, and ticket class (primo or secondo). In major stations, the ticket vendors generally speak some English.

Use a ticket machine if the station has them. These are easy to use, and you can avoid long lines at the ticket window.

Buy a ticket from a travel agent if they’re equipped to handle train tickets. An extra fee will usually be added to the price.

Buy train tickets online and see train schedules online at www.trenitalia.com.

Buy Eurostar e-tickets online from Select Italy, a US-based company. If you’re traveling by Eurostar, remember that seat reservations are mandatory. It’s also possible, and sometimes mandatory, to make seat reservations for IC trains as well.

For travel on regional trains, note that a train ticket buys you transportation on a train, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a seat on that train. If you find that your train is crowded and you can’t find a seat in second class, you may try to find a conductor and ask if your ticket can be upgraded to first class. Please note that local trains are not always listed under the Trenitalia site, so do not be worried if you cannot find a specific local journey listed. They do exist, but you will need to stop at the station to check on times.

Trains run from Aulla to major cities all over Italy, such as Pisa (including the airport), Florence, Lucca, Milan, Venice, Verona, Bologna, Rome, and Naples. To find out exact times and dates for the locations you want, click on www.trenitalia.com (the English language option is at the top right-hand corner) and type in your starting point, your destination, the date you require, and your preference for single or return.

<a Thank you very much!">Francesco Fontana, Italy

"I did the Venice workshop along with Fred. I've subscribed for a while to the VAA and was thrilled to be able to go to one of Barry's workshops. It was everything that Fred says it was. So interesting and informative, but you've got to want to learn. The more you are prepared to put in, the more you will got out of it. Many 'eureka' moments. Barry's a great teacher. My friend came with me, a total non-painter, and she loved it too. It opened her eyes as much as mine.

This year we went to the museum workshop in Madrid at the Prado with Barry to see the huge Sorolla exhibition and to study his work. It was truly wonderful. The online study is fantastic but nothing beats going along to a workshop if you can manage to do so. It has fed through into improving my paintings no end. (Although it's often a case of...the more you learn, the more you realise there is to learn)."

"I did Barry's workshop 2 years ago. It took me one night to realize I'd found THE MASTER. The knowledge was clear, well organized and deep. So what did I do ? I purchased the whole course and spend one month reading the stuff again and again. It's not what you should do but I couldn't stop.
It is really fantastic. You'll find also great exercises, as painting is not about reading but about practice.

Soon I realized a lot of things about how to make a good picture, not only in painting but in moving images. But let me continue. So I decided to go to Barry' s workshop. It was a huge step for me. WHY ?The workshop was in Venice (italy). And I'm French but at this time I'm living in Brazil, this means crossing the big ocean to go to Italy, where Barry was doing the workshop. Then I had lot of work at my daily job (visual effects) so I had find a gap and leave for few days. And naturally had to go alone to concentrate on painting. So I left my family at home.

And so for one week I was in Venice ! I met Barry and a few students that were doing the workshop. Soon we began, and until this day I can't look at the world with the same eyes. If you are just looking to have a demonstration of a trendy painter that's the wrong place to go. But if you are looking to develop your own pictoral entity and get a solid foundation about painting you found the GUY !

Barry taught us in one week more than I could learn during years of reading around, screening dvd's. The first day he introduced us to what it is that makes a painting a good one from a genius one. He soon sent us on a mission to accomplish small exercises.

He pointed out the thing that are obvious when you know them. But to know them, it take some years. And Barry just shares all that stuff with you, building not only strong knowledge about composition, form, observation and and and but also helping you to critique yourself. That means when the workshop is done you can continue learning. The next day he makes some critiques pointing the good things and the bad. He loves the bad things. And when you get one bad things you get a medal. When you get lots of bad things (be prepared) you'll get some gold medals. Why ?

Because he constructs knowledge through experience. That mean failing is good as you learn not to do the same mistake twice. He objectively explains why you did the wrong thing, and explains how do the right thing. And so each day that we were doing the workshop was a huge step forward.

Everyone that went to the workshop was satisfied, people with experience and people without. I for example come from a computer background, so my contact with traditional art was almost non-existent.
I work with 3D (maya mainly) ranging from film to advertising. I'ts a lot about technique and a lot about sense of realism when you compose the images. Doing the workshop will help you understand the fine color tuning, and an ability to critique even when looking a films. I did the workshop and it overcame my expectation. Barry is a great and generous teacher and became a friend as well.

So should you do the workshop? Definitively ! For the knowledge that the teacher shares and also the great places that are chosen for this purpose ! Purchase the pdf, it is a must for the one who need a strong base (watercolor, oil or acrylic) and is a bible to your daily question about what did I do wrong? Why do my pictures not work ? Also it is funny that as you progress, you'll see you barely didn't pay attention to one little line, and reading the stuff again gives you the light that you didn' t turn on because you were not ready for it. Some time I will even catch myself looking for a painter like Mucha, Monet or even contemporary as Jenny Saville and then smile about the new way I see the things (Kind of Matrix....you take the red
pill and see how deep the rabbit hole goes)

Check also Barry's video or internet content. He gets a blog, a forum, a newsletter, well very active person.

Any questions, I'll be pleased to answer....
Ciao
Fred, still in Brazil !!"

Fredpalacio.blogspot.com

"John and I love being at Barry's workshops and have learned so very much from him. Barry is by far the best teacher that I personally have had in many years of study. We both would make the trip just for his lectures. "

Lynn B., Atherton

"Although I am a professional painter with many, many years of experience, I was inspired in the BJR painting workshop. Barry is a fine artist, is well organized, and is a dedicated teacher.”

Ann W., Carmel

"Barry clarified and simplified the elements of plein air painting so well in his 3-day workshop that I felt I had made a year's worth of progress!"

Pati S., Pebble Beach

"I've been a painter most of my life and have a BFA. Barry's workshops have been enormously helpful in enabling me to break through to another level and finally solve chronic, frustrating problems in my work. His clear, straightforward and objective instruction cuts to the chase and facilitates rapid progress. I am a much stronger painter than I was when I started working with Barry."

Peggy B., Santa Cruz

"Watching Barry paint was unlike anything I've seen before- very inspiring. He has a unique mix of meticulous planning and spontaneity. I was so inspired that I had to paint "the new way" one more time before leaving the area. Thanks Barry. "

Lisa M., Point Mugu

"Truly completely welcoming to painters at all levels. Well-paced, wonderful teaching, great mix of time to paint and time to learn together."

Judy L., Pebble Beach

"Compared with other instruction I have had, Barry's instruction was more comprehensive, clearer, more concise. He concentrated on teaching more than demonstrations, which was much more helpful. Barry's publications are explicit and so enlightening. I think Barry has done a wonderful job with both his workshops and his publications, bringing his experience into each. Both are much more intense and comprehensive than most workshops and publications. "

Linda L, Carmel Valley, CA

"I appreciate Barry’s dedication to clear, practical teaching and am looking forward to a big dose. I still share about the huge difference in my painting immediately following Barry’s workshop. I’m so grateful that he does not sacrifice real learning/improvement to save feelings. Artists get plenty of encouragement from families and buyers. A trained and *honest* artistic eye is rare and valuable. In the afternoons you will be free to work on your own paintings, do some sightseeing, or watch Barry at work. This is an invaluable opportunity to observe Barry's process of creation as it actually happens, rather than watching a "canned" presentation. Barry will actually be searching for ideas and creating artwork for his galleries.

The schedule for week one of the painting workshop in Tuscany is:

9:00 to 10:00
Lecture on the topic for the day and critique of previous days work.

10:00 - 12:30
Painting and Quick Studies with personal guidance and advice from Barry.

14:00 to 18:00
Free time for working on your own artwork, sightseeing, or watching Barry at work. I recommend you work on consolidating the information you learned in the morning during this free time, in preparation for the next day of the workshop. This session is important for you to consolidate the information you have learned in the morning session. All work done during the afternoon painting session will be critiqued at the beginning of the following day.

18:30 to 19:00 Review with Barry

19:30 to 21:30 Students generally get together to organize dinner together

Will there be any walking involved?

Yes, there will be some walking when painting in the small hill town, but in the countryside we will generally be near our vehicles. The workshops are for both serious beginners as well as intermediate and advanced students. Absolute beginners are welcome (as long as you are prepared to work hard and are serious about learning how to paint well - these workshops will require some work). In fact I like working with absolute beginners because generally they have no bad habits to unlearn and so the learning goes much more quickly!

June and September workshops
The June and September workshops will be designed for both beginner and advanced painters.
For the beginners, I will cover all the essentials skills like notan, values, composition, and color. You can get an idea of the topics I cover by looking at the workshop video lectures week one and week two.
For the more advanced students I will give individual tuition tailored to the the areas you need to most focus on.

May workshop
The May workshop however will be more geared to returning and good intermediate or advanced students. In this workshop I hope to explore some new ideas and places. The schedule will be flexible and we may also work on the coastline on some beach paintings as well as painting in the countryside. Students in this workshop will be expected to be more independent, and I hope to be able to discuss more advanced topics in painting. I would also like to concentrate on putting figures into compositions, so you should have some basic drawing skills in order to attend this workshop.

How Does the Workshop Integrate with the Self Study Courses?

These workshops have been designed for students who are interested in the Virtual Art Academy® course curriculum. Montepulciano, one of the hilltowns we will be painting on this workshop, is famous for its Vino Nobile wine as well as the wonderful Renaissance buildings and squares. Chianciano, where the Tuscany painting workshop is based, has got two separate identities. the spa town of Chianciano Terme, Tuscany, with parks and avenues, hotels and shops, and also the original core of the town - the centro storico (old town). In this plein air painting workshop in Tuscany there will be many panoramic views to paint from the old town, with the peaks of the Cetona and Amiata mountains of southern Tuscany in the distance; in the valley are the three lakes of Chiusi, Montepulciano and Trasimeno.
